Alicia Keys sure likes to stay true to the lyrics in her hit song - Girl on Fire. Recently named BlackBerry’s Global Creative Director, Keys announced the launch of the BlackBerry Scholars Program this week, marking the first step in BlackBerry’s global women’s initiative designed to inspire more young women to enter and develop careers in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

“It’s important to connect the dots for young women in high school and college, and show them that careers in science and technology are within their reach. And when women do land these jobs, it’s vital they receive the mentoring and support they need to advance in their careers,” Keys said in a news release

BlackBerry points out that women occupy only 25% of IT jobs in the U.S. The global BlackBerry Scholars Program will provide full, four-year scholarships to exceptional young women interested in studying science, technology, engineering or math at an accredited undergraduate institution. And just right up BlackBerry’s alley, the program will also focus on young women with a particular interest in studying and influencing the future of mobile computing. The scholarship will also include a mentorship component with professional opportunities for each scholar.

BlackBerry aims to engage young women at every step of their education path and rise through the workforce. “This is more than just a scholarship, this is the beginning of a powerful network of women,” Keys is quoted as saying on Venture Beat.
