Concordia’s MIS provides solid real life work experiences for all students. Many get to join its awesome 3-term coop program – unique in Montreal. Concordia’s integrated final year project (described below) is state of the art.

With classrooms in the heart of trendy downtown Montreal and steps from Crescent Street club central, the John Molson School of Business (JMSB) MIS major offers lifestyle, a newly updated curriculum, and great connections to local and national employers.

Most important, the curriculum updates let you do a large scale, real world team-based project across a total of 6 full semester courses. Your team starts by putting a proposal together and selling it to a real organization. You then gather requirements, design the solution, do the project management, build and de-bug the solution. This is a lot more than a classroom exercise. Many “clients” of these projects actually put the projects “deliverables” into full time use. Obviously, a successful senior project at JMSB will make you highly employable!

The 3-year undergraduate program is now aligned with the CCICT/CareerMash national BTM program. It also provides greater flexibility to upper year students in the choice of electives and special areas of study. Half the 24 elective credits must be outside the business school – in any subject that strikes your fancy. The other half offers a dozen business minors like entrepreneurship, marketing, data intelligence, international business and supply chain.

The Concordia learning environment is mainly in English, and a special French-language version of the program is available.

Students and graduates get coop placements, in-program projects, and grad jobs at great places to work like Aeroplan, Bell Canada, Bombardier, CGI, Ericsson, and the Canadian Space Agency. Many grads end up at smaller companies in various industries or fast growing tech startups.

Job titles of recent graduates include business analyst, project manager, and business development manager. We heard about one recent JMSB grad who got a first post-grad job as vice president of MIS (in other words, IT) at a company that distributes CDs, DVDs and games across Canada and the US!

Fun Facts

• JMSB is named after John Molson, most known for the brew that bears his name.
• Born in Lincolnshire, England in 1763, John Molson was the eldest son of a farmer. At age eighteen, due to an illness requiring sea air, he embarked on an ocean voyage to the New World.
• At a time when Montrealers drank wine, he founded and developed a thriving brewing business on the banks of the St. Lawrence. He founded one of the first commercial steamship enterprises and the first railway, developed one of Canada's first banking businesses, and built Montreal's first luxury hotel.
• The JMSB undergraduate program rose from sixth to fourth in the country to the seventh annual “Knights Schools Survey” published by Corporate Knights Magazine in 2010. It has ranked first in Quebec since the survey’s inception in 2004.
• The ranking evaluates how sustainability is integrated into Canadian business education. 47 undergraduate programs were assessed in the areas of institutional support, student initiatives and course work.
