Greater Toronto Area (GTA) high school students created a lot of energized buzz May 11 at a CareerMash Youth Tech Jam on how they imagine technology changing the world and how they might drive that change through a tech career.

You could just feel the energy at the Ontario Science Centre as 200 students capped off several weeks of CareerMash Youth Tech Jams held at seven schools across five southern Ontario regions, reaching 500 students in total.  »more

Farhan ThawarFarhan Thawar, VP of Engineering, Xtreme Labs
Mentor to Future Tech Superstars

Farhan is Vice President of Engineering at Xtreme Labs, a go-to source for mobile strategies and apps in Toronto and California’s Silicon Valley. He is also the Dean of Extreme University, Xtreme Labs’ intensive 12-week student program that provides guidance, mentorship, and personal networking opportunities to young entrepreneurs.

Earlier in his career Farhan led all-star software teams at Microsoft Canada and the Toronto-based human resources software company I Love Rewards (now called “Achievers”. He took computer science at the University of Waterloo, and an MBA at the University of Toronto Rotman School of Business.

Polar Mobile, which Kunal launched in 2008 as a university student, puts movies, TV, magazines and newspapers onto smartphones. Polar apps have been downloaded over 10 million times! With clients like CTV, Sports Illustrated, Vogue and the Toronto Maple Leafs, Polar is doing better than ever today.

When Kunal studied software engineering at the University of Waterloo, he loved the technical side of his education but felt he needed lessons in business and leadership. So he started the Impact Entrepreneurship Group, which hosts a ton of conferences, competitions, and campaigns to inspire burgeoning young entrepreneurs.

Innovator & Risk-Taker

Martha’s fearless and creative spirit has come in handy more than once. After graduating from Queen’s with a degree in applied mathematics & mechanical engineering, Martha took off for Silicon Valley to work in tech support with Cisco. Her talent and hard work got noticed, and she soon jumped at an opportunity to build a new department at Cisco.

Her current job puts her at the cutting edge of tech. Not only does she envision new strategies and tools for supporting customers online, she also pushes global teams in new directions by driving the adoption of technologies like Cisco’s internal social network, Quad.
